Android 6.0.1 update unable to format SD card as internal memory can't move app to SD card

I just updated to Android 6.0.1 last night and I realized many things has changed. I can't access my apps store on the SD card from Android 5.1.1. I was able to move the apps to the SD card on 5.1.1 to free up some internal memory. The Marshmallow update supposed to have a better feature. It can mount the SD as internal memory provided I have to formated as internal memory. I bee playing around with my phone all day and I realized on the Sony release, they do not have this feature. I been YouTubeing around and found that within 6.0.1 in the settings /storage/SD card sub-menu, there should be 3 options. Eject, Format, and Format to internal memory. That's what I'm missing. Also if u insert the SD card for the first time, it should pop up a notification asking you what to do with the SD card. It didn't ask me. This is a known feature with marshmallow. My phone only have 16g, it won't hold all my apps, that was the reason why I move some apps to SD on Android 5.1.1. So what's going on?

I also factory reset my phone and format my SD again on my computer, it still don't work. It only treats it as a portable storage.

I undid mine. I found it more troublesome when my computer can't read the drive as well. I need it to transfer data back and forth. I'll stick with it as an external storage for now. hopefully Sony will change their mind in the next update. thanks for the info though.

I agree, the SD Card can't work as a mass storage anymore on Sony devices, but I'm used to that as I didn't even had this option before MM on my Nvidia Shield Tablet/HTC One M9. Seems it's an extra feature made by Sony after it was removed by google after Honeycomb (if I'm not mistaken with the release).

Anyway I use FTP (fileszilla apk) + wifi connection, or ADB push that seems to be the fastest way to copy over the USB cable (command example: adb push "E:\my folder\0PJAIMG.zip" /sdcard/0PJAIMG.zip
to copy whole folder use: adb push "E:\folder_name" /sdcard/folder_name).

here is another user feedback:

The Storage option (to move the app and data to the SD Card) has disappeared after the 6.0.1 upgrade.

How do I now move a newly installed app and data to my SD card?

the option to transfer the app to sd card also depends on the developer of the app. you can observe this by going to your installed apps. settings>apps>storage used. you will observe that some app have this option , others have not.

Hi so I have a similar problem. I get how you use the sd cards is slightly different. My problem is everytime I go to format the SD card it starts and stops at 20% and I cannot use the SD card on my Xperia X performance.

Sony!!!! Please let us, your customers decide what we want to do with the SD card. You render the Z3C useless with only 16gb internal memory. We need the SD card for apps. It is bad enough that camera is less useable that my 5 year old Nokia.

Here are some things that work,
get a new sd card, the sony xperia will format it.
After that some app will have the possibility to change from internal to external (sd card)
- found that facebook can be move to external storage, that means some some part

If problem with app running after 6.0.1
- Try to uninstall and install

I had problem with tomtom go, which uses sd for maps, cannot work with old sd card, also do not try to format it under version 6
= solution here are new sd card (i used 32 gb (fast 90r/w) seen that other thad problem with large sd card)
- Reinstall tomtom go
- Choosing map,
> afterward control in setting storage, maps placed in sd.

Yes you can move some apps to the SD card. Most are not movable, it requires local storage.

The SD card does not have to be new. A format would be best but not required. However the SD card must have lest then 32G of available space. Any more the 32G available space, there is an error moving the app. The app will require movement again once it's updated.

Facebook, I had a glitch when the app was stored in SD, forgot what that glitch was. Had to revert back to local storage.

Hi, I have a question, how to reverse this process, becouse i make this on dev android 7.0, but after that i backup my soft again to 6.0.1 and now my phone cant find sd after that even my pc can`t see that sd card only when i open administrative instruments on pc i can see that sd card but i can`t format it.

i have no idea in regards to Android 7 Development Edition. the Sony Android 6 does not allow mounting SD as internal. However, I believe the process is within setting, storage. From what you have mentioned, you might need to have a low level format of the SD card.

i think you can find some information on how to do a low level format on the SD card from the internet. You might want to call support as well.
