I got my Z1 today and for more than half the day the phone worked fine, then it stopped recieving a cellular signal. Everything is up to date, I've removed the sim and it acknowledges the sim is inserted or not, I've gone into the menu and tried to search for the mobile network, after it finds it, it then tells me that either the sim is faulty or the network is unavailable, I've reset the phone using Update service and am at a loss

I see, in this case please take it back to the place of purchase so that they may test it there or at the very least request a SIM swap from your network provider.

Are you able to test a secondary SIM in your phone as it sounds like there is an issue with the SIM as opposed to the phone?

I have no other SIM to test, roommates are with other carriers and the phone is locked
