new laptop - charging/connection

I have a Xperia Z tablet and Z phone. I've put the following in another forum, without much luck. I'm hoping someone from Sony can help me. I'll copy;

I buy a new gt70 from msi. It's a nice laptop and from what I Can gather Windows8 is very buggy.

My drama is, when I connect my xperia z phone to the usb port my Phone goes erratic with the charging light, and battery icon swaps between normal and charging very quick. The phone does not respond, screen flickers. I only leave it like this For a few seconds. One time it shut the Phone off, due to power being so erratic.

I've tried all 5 ports, and the USB3 ports just do it even quicker. Even Windows is constantly making the connect\disconnect beeps.

I happened to have a mate with a new machine, and a s4 having the same problems, but started working, and worked on my laptop too. My phone Worked twice on his laptop, but 75% fail with the same result.

It seems no one in the world has had this drama. But one and a half laptops are doing it here.

------ I updated this ---------

The phone is currently in mass storage mode, so it should just mount like any standard usb mass storage without any drivers.

I will download drivers.and try, but I'm pretty doubtful as it disconnects and reconnects that quick, that it won'. Be transferring much data.

------ Again -----

I've tried pre-installed drivers, same issue.

I've also got a xperia Z tablet – Same issues.

This is also the case whilst in BIOS, i plug in these devices, and same problem. Therefore, not a windows problem?

I've got an ipad working, with no concerns.

I just fired up old faithful, and no dramas with what ever you throw at it.

Although I don't know why, i tried another cable, and bang, first hit every time.

Can someone shed any light onto why the "broken" cable still works on the old laptop, and always has?
