Cannot Delete Text Message Conversations

I cannot delete any SMS messages on my Xperia Z1 Compact. I have tried multiple methods (and apps) but the only one that appears to work is deleting individual messages - which with almost 25k texts saved up I am not prepared to do.

I have 'Delete old messages' app and have been using it for a while assuming it deleted messages for me but turns out it hasn't worked properly (hence so many texts)

Last resort I will backup everything but text messages and restore my phone, but are there any other options in the meantime?

Hi CheeseyBiscuit,

Welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.

You may need to clear the data from the App first and then try deleting conversation threads.

Menu > settings > Apps > App > Messaging > Clear Data

let us know how you get on.

I tried that with little success, so decided while my phone was charging overnight to start the delete process then just leave my phone so the screen will shut itself down after a minute or so. It has appeared to have worked, but must have taken more than half an hour (as this is the most time iv sat and waited for it to complete the process before deciding it wasn't working).

Just a shame the app to remove anything over a month old doesn't work, and i have to wipe everything from each contact.

Thanks for your help anyway Slightly_smiling_Face

No problem, the only thing I can suggest would be performing the Backup as you stated and performing a factory reset, as it could simply be a glitch.

I really dislike Sony's poorly integrated Messaging app for SMS, as run on the Xperia Z1.   ( My Android version is 5.0.2)

How do I eradicate Sony's Messaging app from my phone, and substitute it with MyPhoneExplorer, freeware which integrates calendar, contact and SMS functions far more intuitively?

I am not paid by MyPhoneExplorer, unlike Sony software engineers who are paid by.... erm Sony,  Any contributions of clear, objective, easily understood step-by-step instructions will be warmly appreciated.
