Our Sony is less than two years ago and it has started switching itself off at random times and then restarting. It also frequently will not respond to the remote where the only cure is to unplug the power and then replug. The sleep and power saver settings are OFF

Could you try resetting the TV? Press on Home - Settings - Customer support - Factory settings.
